The dark secrets of every Pocket Superyacht captain.

It’s one of the exciting things about yachts; there’s always something new to learn! The current thinking is that it should be a process of trial and error taking years to learn how to run a yacht. However, the current reality is that we are in dire need of young, energetic, personable and… ideally, highly knowledgeable crew to run luxury yachts between 50 and 100ft! Brands like Lagoon are splashing a new luxury catamaran between 50ft and 78ft every 2,5 days(!) and CNB is launching hull number 25 of the 76’ less than 3 years after the first one was christened, Swan is doing as good as ever and Oyster is seemingly back on its feet. The market of Pocket Superyachts is booming and there is not enough time for crew to grow in their role and learn all the different aspects of running a yacht before being expected to be an expert. And it’s not their fault at all!   Every Pocket Superyacht captain carries a set of dark secrets with them… This is a problem that the industry has created for itself. The high demand for new blood sucks people into positions, biting off more than they can […]

Bad owners, bad crew

I have often heard a description of Invisible Crew come back as “They put good crew together with good owners.” Now, I am not against that idea as it is positive and probably true. But it would imply that there are bad owners out there. Bad Owners It’s true that some people are harder to please than others, but what it all comes down to is one word: expectations. Especially in our niche, the Pocket Superyachts, there we often see new owners who have never had crew working for them before. Some of them might be sailors themselves and, in their opinion, have done the job of crew, for free and in their spare time! Others might never have had crew or house staff work for them and are either uncomfortable with expressing clear demands from the crew. Worse even, is when they expect a level of formality and service that is unpractical and detrimental for the harmonious atmosphere within the confines of a Pocket Superyacht. None of these situations result in a positive outcome. We need to have all questions answered to find fitting crew. I literally have one client who doesn’t care about the exterior cleanliness of the […]

Why Pocket Superyachts are highly important for the whole industry.

My visit to the 2017 Cannes Boatshow can be categorised as a success. I considered myself very lucky that my hairdresser had availability when I walked in without appointment the day before flying to the Côte d’Azur. Because, madre mía, the waterfront avenue Le Croisette is a very Dolce Vita affair! Looking at all the people in the ridiculously long entrance queue (due to a poorly organised security check) one could assume that the show was welcoming a serious clientele. On day 4 of the show, the head of sales of a very successful Pocket Superyacht brand whispered to me in French that they sold 2 yachts on the show. I spoke to a lot of sales representatives and brokers. They all had one or three prospects in the pipeline. And most importantly, they seemed relieved to learn about Invisible Crew’s services! Really, relieved! One of them looked like he had been waiting for me his whole life! That made me chuckle. But they are absolutely right to be concerned. Established brands seem to be selling with relative ease. New brands in the 50ft to 80ft range are popping up left, right and center. And existing brands that used to […]

What is Invisible Crew up to this summer?

Writing for The Islander Magazine is not only great exposure, the actual writing is a good moment to reflect on how things are going with Invisible Crew. My lean little company is gaining momentum largely thanks to the great crew that I work with, the partnering companies with which we are creating ever closer bonds and a few individuals in my close circle. However, at this time of the year I probably wouldn’t take an hour to have get an overview of all the things that are going on. They tend to just flash through my mind like a train passing by at full speed. The 85ft Royal Huisman Ebb Tide is nearly ready for the season while going through its first crew change in four years, the time that it has been under Invisible Crew’s management. Fons is handing over the helm, or better, the control over the engine room, to his fellow countryman Hans who will keep the yacht running smoothly with his Dutch craftsmanship. We hope to do more work with Fons in the future and we welcome Hans! The CNB76 Aenea is keeping us busy booking berths in highly coveted marinas at busy times of the […]
